Water Quality Testing

Learn different methods to test water quality, and how to evaluate the results.  Age 5 to 10 focus will be on the ponds around the Center.  Age 11 to 17 will conduct the Otter Point Creek Survey from the Pontoon Boat.

Microscope Investigations

Learn about various types of microscopes, and conduct investigations that help to familiarize students with the operation and potential of the tool.  Age 5 to 10 will utilize simpler microscopes with familiar and collected items.  Age 11 to 17 will use multiple types of microscopes, with camera/computer interfaces to investigate questions and create files of their findings.

Reptiles and Amphibians

Meet the herps of Otter Point Creek.  Learn how to classify them, where they fit in the food chain, how they are adapted to their environment, and how we study them to determine population level and health.  Age 5 to 10 focus is on hands-on Discovery Room activities and adaptations. Age 11 to 17 will conduct guided investigations of Center herps and then participate in ongoing herp research projects.

Growing Grasses for the Bay

Learn what submerged aquatic vegetation or SAV is, why it is important to the Bay and how you can help restore bay grasses. Receive instruction, equipment, and plant material to grow SAV in your home. Optional experiment instructions available. Then join us this spring to plant the SAV in Otter Point Creek.

Amphibian Adventures

Learn about the frogs and toads of Leight Park. Classification, life cycles, and adaptations will be explored, followed by field collection of specimens at the vernal pond and tanks surrounding the Center.

Otter Point Creek Environmental Survey

Become an environmental scientist for the day, as you collect water samples and conduct water quality assessments on the pontoon boat and in the lab. Use the data to make recommendations concerning a simulated development project for Otter Point Creek. This program is for ages 11 to 17.

All About Fish

Determine what makes a fish unique, explore their adaptations, and then sample for fish in Otter Point Creek.  Age 11 to 17 students have the option of including a fish dissection.
